A Day of Remembrance: Honoring courage of journalists on Int'l Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists
PALESTINE - JERUSALEM - LEBANON - ISRAEL - UKRAINE: On Nov. 2, the world observes the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a day designated by the United Nations to honor journalists who have been killed or targeted in conflict zones.Videos showing heavy bombardments, destructions, funeral services, and mourning ceremonies illustrate the heavy toll on journalists, who continue to risk their lives to report from conflict areas.These journalists, who gave their lives to document the realities of war, are remembered for their courage and commitment.The recent escalations in Gaza, Lebanon, and Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of several journalists.Among them were Montaser Al-Sawaf, who has been working for Anadolu since 2014, and Mohammed Abu Hatab, both Palestinian journalists working for Anadolu, who were killed while covering events in Gaza. Hasan Hamad, an Anadolu cameraman, Samer Abu Daqqa, an Al Jazeera cameraman, and Hamza Wael Al-Dahdouh, who lost his life with his father by his side, were also killed. Other journalists who lost their lives include Mustafa Thuraya, a freelance journalist for Agence France-Presse (AFP), and Hamza Murtaja, a co-owner of a local media company.In Jerusalem, Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was fatally shot during clashes, while Issam Abdallah, a Reuters journalist, was killed in Lebanon amid ongoing hostilities.In Ukraine, former BBC journalist Oleksandr Bondarenko was killed while serving in the Ukrainian armed forces.On Monday, November 1, the Gaza-based Government Media Office reported that the number of journalists killed by Israel in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has risen to 183.- Writing by Berkay Gur
