Burundi's iconic legacy survives through legendary drummers
GITEGA, BURUNDI - MAY 22: Drummers showcased an iconic performance at a sacred temple in Gishora, located 7 km from the city of Gitega in the heart of Burundi on Monday (May 22).Gishora drummers, who belong to a community residing on the same hilltop and pass on this art from generation to generation, constitute the main royal drum sanctuary of the former Burundi kingdom.Sacred drummers following in the footsteps of the kings, continue to preserve tradition of the Burundi drum, which is a symbol of power, on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.The temple built in the early 1900s, it continues to maintain its significance even in the present day.Drumming is an ancient practice in Burundi that combines martial arts dance, specific rhythms, religious rituals and epic poetry.In 2007, the government passed a series of laws and policies to protect this ancient art form.
