ISTANBUL: Elderly watchmaker work in tiniest shop of iconic Grand Bazaar
ISTANBUL, TURKIYE - JANUARY 07: Turkish man Zekeriya Senkardes, who has been working as a watchmaker in the smallest shop of the Grand Bazaar for more than two decades, makes a living in his tiny shop.Senkardes, 66, told Anadolu Agency that he has left behind 45 years in the profession and has been working in his half-square-meter shop for 23 years.The shop has been a staple in Grand Bazaar for customers looking for a battery change, watch cleanse and more nowadays.Stating that it is difficult to work in a half-square-meter shop, but that he is used to these conditions in the Grand Bazaar, where every inch is valuable, Senkardes said "This is the most interesting point of the bazaar. When tourists visit the country, guides bring tourists directly here."Senkardes has to keep his fit due to his workplace is very small."When I rented this shop in 1999, I could enter it more easily. However, as I gained weight over time, it became more difficult to enter the shop," he said."I have two apprentices in this profession, but there is not enough space to train apprentices here," Senkardes added.The Grand Bazaar is like living museum with its 557 years of history, thousands of daily visitors and shops offering both traditional and modern goods. It is not only Istanbul's but one of Turkey's most significant cultural and historic tourist attractions.One of Istanbul's most visited tourist attractions, the Grand Bazaar is located inside the walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih and the neighborhood of Kapalıcarsi. It has 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops, which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily.The construction of the Grand Bazaar's core started during the winter of 1455/56, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople; Sultan Mehmet II ordered an edifice devoted to trading textiles.
