Mount Etna lava flow continues as new fissure opens on eastern flank
CATANIA, ITALY - JANUARY 02: Volcanic activity continues at Mount Etna after late December 2025 paroxysms at the North-East Crater in Catania, Italy on January 02, 2026. Although explosive activity at the summit has decreased, a new eruptive fissure opens on January 1, 2026, at about 2,000 meters on the volcano’s eastern flank, generating a lava flow into the Valle del Bove. Experts monitor the lateral effusive activity, which remains distant from populated areas and poses no immediate threat. The VONA alert level stays at orange, and Catania International Airport remains fully operational with no impact on air traffic. Photo taken from Zafferana Etnea, near Catania.
