KONYA, TURKIYE - FEBRUARY 24: A sinkhole measuring 37 meters in diameter and 12 meters deep has formed in Türkiye's central Konya province.The sinkhole appeared in an area of approximately 1400 square meters in a field located in the Seyit Haci Yaylasi neighborhood.The director of the Sinkhole Research and Application Center at Konya Technical University, Professor Dr. Fetullah Arik, stated that a new sinkhole had formed in Karapinar on Thursday (Feb. 23).Arik emphasized that they could not find a connection between the recent earthquakes and the newly formed sinkholes, saying: "Yesterday, according to what the locals said, a new sinkhole formed in Karapinar. We were in the area to investigate it.However, we could not correlate this sinkhole with the earthquake that occurred today or the big earthquakes that happened on February 6th. Even while we were taking measurements, an earthquake occurred.But the sinkhole had already formed here. It occurred about 20 days after the big earthquakes. So, this sinkhole is not related to the previous big earthquakes or the current earthquake. Or, we have not been able to establish that connection.Perhaps this sinkhole was already on the brink of collapse, and the earthquake may have had an impact on it.However, if the sinkhole had collapsed during the earthquake, we could have said, 'Okay, it happened because of the earthquake.' But since it happened 20 days after the earthquake, we cannot say that."Residents in the area reported that sinkholes like this frequently occur in Karapinar, and a large sinkhole has now formed in their neighbor's field.Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area until further notice, as sinkholes can pose a serious risk to individuals and properties.
