Sea turtles along Antalya coast in Turkiye
ANTALYA, TURKIYE - JUNE 19: A sea turtle is seen on the beach where it lays its eggs in Antalya, Turkiye on June 19, 2024. The largest nesting area of sea turtles in the Mediterranean is Turkiye, with 640 km long Antalya coast being the largest nesting area in the country. Ecological Research Association (EKAD), with the permission of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks of the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and under the sponsorship of TUPRAG, camped at Ulualan Public Beach and Recreation Area in 2023, and detected nearly 1700 turtle nests, which the number climbed to over 2000 in 2024. Two Caretta carettas named Gold and Silver are equipped with satellite tracking devices and released into the nature at Ulualan Public Beach to collect scientific data on their migration routes, feeding and hibernation areas of sea turtles.
