Thousands gather at Cairo’s historic Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque for Eid al-Fitr
CAIRO, EGYPT - MARCH 20, 2026: Thousands of worshippers filled the historic Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque in Old Cairo on Friday, March 20, to perform Eid al-Fitr prayers, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan at one of the Islamic world’s most significant landmarks.Congregants began arriving in the Fustat district before dawn, with men, women, and children lining up in rows that spanned the mosque’s expansive interior and outdoor courtyards.The atmosphere was one of profound devotion as the community offered the traditional two-rakat holiday prayer followed by collective supplications for peace and prosperity.The Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque holds a unique place in Egyptian history. Commissioned in 641 by the commander Amr Ibn Al-As following the Muslim conquest of Egypt.The structure currently covers approximately 13,000 square meters, having undergone numerous expansions over the centuries to accommodate Cairo's growing population.Following the holiday sermon, the solemnity of the prayer gave way to a festive celebration in the mosque’s surroundings.Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Islamic holy month Ramadan and begin with a special prayer in mosques and open-air areas.
