Turkish men organize local 'Formula' by wooden vehicles on snowy road
RIZE, TURKEY - RECENT, DECEMBER: A traditional wooden car race organized by the local "Formulaz Association" was held on Sunday, Dec. 26, in Turkey's northeastern province of Rize. The name of the race "Formulaz" is a combination of the world famous Formula One race and the "Laz" people from the country's Black Sea region. The size of Turkey’s Laz population is unknown, but they mainly live in the northeastern section with around 130,000-150,000 speakers of the Laz language.A group of Laz men from the region took part in the race with their wooden vehicles.Normally, the event is held in the summer, but for the first time it was done in winter."It is more fun during the winter and more exciting. Those who do not drive these wooden cars can have no idea about it," said one participant Recep Cakir.Racers drove cars down on snowy roads and they were then pulled up to the hill by motor vehicles."There is no need for oil, tax, and insurance for our cars. And there is no brake, we do not need it. You drive down in this race but do not drive up," said Murat Gul, head of the Formulaz Association."We want to promote this race because it is unique. Everyone has to make their own car. The race begins from there," Gul said, adding that each wooden car has its own features and materials.
