Two dams in Turkey's Van at risk of drying up
VAN, TURKEY - DECEMBER 14: A view from Zernek Dam, which was established on Hosap Stream in Gurpinar district for irrigation and electricity generation in 1988 with a water capacity of 105 million cubic meters, in Turkey's Van province on December 14, 2021. The water level in Zernek Dam dropped to 22 million cubic meters. After this decrease, some parts of the dam lake became drought. Zernek Dams built on the Hosap Stream in Van and the Sarimemet dams built on the Karasu Stream are in danger of drying out due to the low water level. The excessive evaporation, which developed due to the decrease in precipitation and the increase in temperature, caused a great decrease in the level of the dams as well as the rivers, ponds and water resources in the region.
